Katrin Korfmann grew up in Berlin, lives and works in Amsterdam, where she studied at Rietveld Academie, specialising in photography. She continued her research during residencies at Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, Cittadellarte in Biella and the Chinese European Art Centre in Xiamen, China.
Since the late 1990s her work has been exhibited internationally in galleries, museums, alternative art institutions and public space. Her work is represented in numerous private and public collections.

She won several prizes, including Radostar Prize (CH), Prix de Rome (2nd prize) and the Esther Kroon Award (NL) and received grants from international institutions such as Robert Bosch and Würth Foundations, Akademie der Künste Berlin (DE) and Mondriaan Fund (NL).

I am attracted to the spectacle of daily life in public space and fascinated to observe people in motion. By capturing these moments, I intend to suggest a perspective on busy urban scenes, as portrayals of contemporary change, dynamics within the grid and human interaction.
A common element in my photographs and installations is the monochromatic backdrop, which I refer to as ‘space zero’. Since my photographs are often taken from the zenith, the floor forms a solid colored background, like a canvas or a backdrop in a photo studio, a stage, ready for a play to start. I focus all attention on people, without being preoccupied by the specifics of cultural background or location. The aerial perspective allows me to exclude the surroundings: architecture and any reference to a specific location. Moreover, this view is ideal for observation: one becomes the invisible voyeur, photographer and viewer of the artwork alike.
My final image is a total fiction, involving dislocation, recombination and redirection. By using many impressions of one location merged into the final photograph, I want to recreate the experience that I have in my mind. The photograph is no longer a single moment, but a river of accumulated images. This way, I present an objective essence from a subjective experience that, in turn, can replace a memory in someone else’s mind.
